Clipper or trimmer?
Hair clipper. A wide blade for bulk hair. It works with guards that set the length and cuts a large area quickly. It is the tool for a whole haircut.
Trimmer. A narrow blade for detail — beard, moustache, sideburns, neckline. It does not remove bulk, it draws lines.
In practice you need both, which is why many sets include them together. If you cut your own hair, the clipper does most of it and the trimmer finishes it.
The brands mean something here
Wahl and Moser are the barbershop names. These are machines built for ten hours of continuous use, with blades that can be sharpened and parts still available years later.
Philips operates in domestic use with an emphasis on convenience: self-sharpening blades, washable heads, cordless operation.
If you cut only your own hair every fortnight, a domestic machine is enough. If you cut the whole family’s hair or work professionally, the difference in durability is fully justified.
The three things that decide the experience
Guards and increments. How many lengths it covers and how small the step between them is. Machines with an adjustable guard give far more options than a set of fixed ones.
Battery or mains. Cordless is more convenient, but mind the runtime: a machine lasting thirty minutes is enough for one haircut, not three. Professional models run from the mains while charging.
Blade oil. The most overlooked point. A few drops after every use keep the blade sharp and cool. Without oiling, the blade heats up, pulls hair instead of cutting and goes blunt within months.
