What a home actually needs
The answer is shorter than the impressive 200-piece cases suggest — of which you will use fifteen.
The basics that cover almost every household job: a screwdriver set with cross-head and flat in two sizes each, pliers and long-nose pliers, an adjustable spanner, a hammer, a tape measure and side cutters.
With those you assemble furniture, tighten what came loose, change a socket and hang a shelf. Whatever is left over in a 200-piece case is space and weight, not capability.
Where it is worth paying more
It is not worth it on everything, and the distinction is clear.
On screwdrivers, yes. A cheap screwdriver rounds off and destroys the screw — and a ruined screw in assembled furniture is a serious problem. The steel of the tip is the difference.
On pliers, yes. The joint and the hardening of the jaws decide whether it grips or slips.
On a hammer and tape measure, not particularly. The difference is small for domestic use.
And a criterion that always works: a handle that does not slip in a sweaty hand. Grip is the difference between a tool that works and a tool that gets away from you.
Electrical work: the limit
There are tools with insulated handles for work near mains wiring, and they matter.
But insulation is a protective measure, not a permit. The rule that does not change: switch off at the main breaker and confirm with a tester that there is no power — before touching anything. A light switch is not enough; it breaks one conductor, not necessarily the right one.
And the obvious point worth stating: work on a consumer unit, a new circuit or altering an installation is a job for a licensed electrician. Changing a socket is not the same as working on a board.

Frequently asked questions
- What tools does a home need?
- A screwdriver set, pliers, long-nose pliers, an adjustable spanner, a hammer, a tape measure and side cutters. They cover almost everything.
- Is a 200-piece case worth it?
- Usually not. You will use fifteen — the rest is space and weight.
- Where is it worth paying more?
- On screwdrivers and pliers. A cheap screwdriver rounds off and destroys the screw.
- Are insulated tools enough for electrical work?
- They are a protective measure, not a permit. Switch off at the main breaker and confirm with a tester before touching.
- Can I change a socket myself?
- With the main breaker off and confirmation there is no power. Work on a board or a new circuit needs a licensed electrician.
Buy a few good tools rather than many mediocre ones. And before any electrical work, switch off at the main breaker and confirm.
