First: can your laptop be upgraded at all?
Before buying anything, check two things. First: many current thin laptops have memory soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded at all. Second: those that can have one or two slots, and often one is already occupied.
The answer is in the manual or the manufacturer’s support page, which also states the maximum supported memory. If you are unsure, send us the exact laptop model and we will check.
SO-DIMM is not DIMM
Laptop memory is physically smaller than desktop memory and uses a different slot. A DIMM will not fit a laptop in any way, and vice versa.
The DDR5 and DDR4 split applies here too: it is determined by the laptop and the two are not interchangeable. Check what is already installed before ordering.
How much memory is worth it
If your laptop has 8GB and stalls with many tabs or heavy applications, upgrading to 16GB is the most noticeable improvement per euro you can make — often more noticeable than a new machine.
32GB makes sense for video editing, virtual machines and professional use. If the laptop has two slots, two matching modules enable dual channel and perform better than one large module.

- It is stated in the manufacturer specifications. It is not safe to assume — some models have a lower ceiling than you would expect.
- Is it worth upgrading an old laptop?
- If it has 8GB and is slowing you down, going to 16GB together with an SSD can give it another two or three years of life.
