Who needs them today
Almost no current laptop and very few cases still have a disc drive. That does not mean the need vanished — it means it moved to an external USB drive that you take out when needed and keep in a drawer.
The real uses are specific: digitising an old collection of CDs and DVDs, installing software that came on disc, reading files from old backups, and playing films on physical media.
One argument for physical discs
A properly stored archival writable disc holds data for many years with no power, no subscription and no dependence on a service that might close. For family photographs and documents that must survive decades, it remains a useful third option alongside a drive and the cloud.
Internal or external?
Internal — for a desktop with a 5.25-inch front bay. Note that many current cases no longer have one, so check before ordering.
External USB — works on any machine, with no installation and no tools. The obvious choice for laptops and for anyone who needs one rarely.

Frequently asked questions
- My laptop has no disc drive.
- You need an external USB drive. It connects and works immediately, with no installation.
- Will an internal drive fit my case?
- Only if it has a 5.25-inch bay with a front opening. Many current cases no longer do.
- Does it read and write Blu-ray?
- It depends on the model. The specifications state which media it reads and which it writes.
- Is it worth it for backups?
- As a third option alongside a drive and the cloud, yes. A properly stored archival disc depends on no power supply and no subscription.
A small category with steady demand. If you have an old disc collection or software on CD, an external USB drive settles it once and for all.
