Why they are decided together

A processor without adequate cooling does not burn out — it throttles. That is the insidious part: the system works normally but does not deliver what you paid for, and the user often never finds out why.

So the two choices are made together. Three things must match: the socket (the cooler needs a bracket for your board), the thermal output (the cooler must handle what the processor produces), and the height (the cooler must fit the case).

The one mistake almost everyone makes

They buy the processor, assume a cooler is in the box, and discover at the last moment that none is included. It happens mostly with high-performance models, where the manufacturer assumes you will fit your own.

The second common one: buying a cooler without checking the maximum height the case accepts, and the side panel will not close. One minute in the case specifications solves both.

Frequently asked questions

Do I definitely need a separate cooler?
Only if the processor does not include one. Several models ship with a cooler in the box, while most high-performance ones do not. It is stated in the specifications.
Does every cooler fit every processor?
No. The cooler needs a mounting bracket for your motherboard socket. Most current coolers include brackets for the current AMD and Intel sockets.
What happens if the cooler is not adequate?
The processor reduces its own frequency to protect itself. Nothing breaks, but you lose performance — usually without noticing.
Do I need to buy thermal paste as well?
Most new coolers have paste pre-applied or a syringe in the box. You need separate paste when refitting an old cooler.

Choose the processor first based on your use, and immediately after that a cooler based on the socket, the thermal output and the height of your case.
