What a scanner changes day to day
Typing a code is slow and error-prone. A scanner reads in a fraction of a second and makes no typing mistakes — and at a till with a queue, that is a whole difference in customer experience.
In the warehouse, a scanner is the precondition for accurate stocktaking: you scan instead of counting and writing, and error rates fall close to zero.
And on goods receipt, cross-checking an invoice against physical stock takes minutes instead of hours.
What to check
Code type. Simple scanners read one-dimensional barcodes. If you need QR or two-dimensional codes — for vouchers, e-tickets or product marking — you need a 2D scanner. It cannot be upgraded in software.
Connection. Wired USB units work immediately as a keyboard, with no installation. Wireless ones give freedom of movement in a warehouse, at the cost of charging.
Durability. In a warehouse the scanner will be dropped. Professional models state a drop rating from a specific height — that is not marketing, it is the difference between one year and five.
The equipment works as a system
A warehouse or retail system needs three things together: a scanner to read, a label printer to print the codes, and a UPS so the till does not shut down mid-transaction.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it need software installation?
- Most USB scanners work as a keyboard: connect it and the code appears wherever the cursor is.
- Does it read QR codes?
- Only 2D scanners. Simple ones read barcodes only and cannot be upgraded.
- Wired or wireless?
- Wired for a fixed till. Wireless for warehouse and stocktaking work, where you have to move.
- Will it survive a warehouse?
- Professional models state a drop rating. In a warehouse environment it is the most critical specification.
If you record stock with pen and paper, a scanner changes your day. Pair it with a label printer for a complete system.
