Two entirely different approaches
Mechanical epilator. Rotating tweezers that pull hair out from the root. The result lasts two to four weeks, rather than two days with a razor. It is painful the first few times and clearly less so afterwards, as the hair weakens.
Light-based device (IPL). It does not remove hair — it targets the root with light pulses so that regrowth gradually reduces. It requires a programme of several weeks and then maintenance.
Important for light-based devices: they work on the contrast between dark hair and light skin. On very light, grey or white hair they do not work, and on very dark skin they are not recommended. Every device has a suitability chart — check it before buying.
How it hurts less
It is not a matter of tolerance, it is technique.
In or after a shower. Warmth relaxes the pores and the hair comes out more easily. Many models work with water for exactly this reason.
Stretch the skin with your free hand and move the device against the direction of growth, slowly. Rushing breaks the hairs instead of removing them, and then it does not last.
In the evening, not the morning. Mild redness settles overnight and you wake with no marks.
And a reality: after the first three or four sessions the sensation changes noticeably. Most people who give up, give up on the first.
What to check
Head width. A wide head for legs, a narrow one for underarms and sensitive areas. Sets include attachments for both.
Cordless wet use. It allows use in the shower, which is both gentler and cleaner.
Built-in light. It reveals fine hairs that are otherwise invisible — a small detail that changes the result.
