Where to actually start

The mistake most people make is starting with whatever looks impressive. The order that works is different — start from a problem you already have.

"I forget whether I locked up." A smart lock. It is the most immediately noticeable step in the whole category.

"I leave things switched on." A smart plug or a relay. It costs very little and solves it the same day.

"I want to see the house while away." A camera.

"My heating costs too much." A smart thermostat — Netatmo. It is one of the few products in this category that pays for itself.

One thing at a time. A smart home is built over time, not in one order.

Wi-Fi or a hub-based system?

This is the decision that determines everything afterwards, and it is worth thinking through before you buy the second product.

Direct Wi-Fi. Devices such as Shelly, Sonoff, TP-Link, Yeelight connect to your router and work immediately, with nothing in between. Cheap, simple, ideal for two or three devices. The drawback shows later: every brand has its own app, and the Wi-Fi loads up as you add more.

Hub-based system. Fibaro works this way: devices talk to a central hub over their own wireless protocol rather than Wi-Fi. Advantages: greater range, lower power use, one app for everything and — most importantly — automations that keep working without internet.

The practical rule: for a few devices, Wi-Fi. For a whole house or new build, a hub-based system — and choose it from the start, because switching later means discarding what you bought.

Smart locks: what to ask

Yale with 17 products and Nuki are the names here. Before buying, four questions that matter more than any feature.

1. What happens when the battery dies? Serious locks warn well in advance and have a backup route — a physical key or emergency external power. Without that, you are locked out.

2. What happens in a power or internet outage? The lock must work locally. If it depends on a connection to open, it is not the right choice for a front door.

3. Does it fit your door? Door thickness, lock type and cylinder length all need checking. Not every lock is compatible with every security door.

4. How does someone else get in? Temporary codes for a tradesperson, a cleaner or a guest — that is what makes a smart lock genuinely useful rather than a toy.

Automation and thermostats

Nice — garage and gate automation. This is professional installation equipment, not something you fit yourself on a Saturday. Remotes, motors and photocells that require correct force adjustment — a badly set gate is a hazard to children and cars.

Netatmo — thermostats. The logic is simple and proven: instead of heating the whole house all day, you schedule by hour and by room. In a house that empties in the morning, the difference on the bill is real.

Shelly and Sonoff — relays. They fit behind the existing switch, so the switch keeps working normally while the light is also controlled from an app. It is the cheapest way to make an existing light smart — but installation involves working on mains wiring and is an electrician’s job, not an experiment.

Three things to know before investing

Change every default password. This applies to every networked device — camera, lock, hub. Factory passwords are publicly known.

Keep the firmware updated. Updates close security holes. A forgotten camera on old firmware is a door into your network.

Think about what happens when the internet goes. The question nobody asks and everybody regrets. Good systems retain local control; cheap ones stop entirely. For a lock and for heating, that is no detail.

Frequently asked questions about smart home

Where should I start?
From a problem you already have — a forgotten lock, lights left on, heating that costs too much. One thing at a time.
Wi-Fi or a hub system?
Wi-Fi for two or three devices. A hub system for a whole house — and choose it from the start, because switching later means discarding what you bought.
What happens if the internet drops?
It depends on the system. Good ones retain local control; cheap ones stop. For a lock and heating, ask before buying.
Am I locked out if the lock battery dies?
Not with a serious lock — it warns early and has a backup physical key or emergency external power.
Can I install a relay myself?
It involves working on mains wiring. That is an electrician’s job.
Is a smart thermostat worth it?
It is one of the few products in this category that pays for itself, particularly in a house that empties in the morning.

Start from a problem, not from a device. And if you intend to do a whole house, choose the system from the start — it is the one decision that is not easily changed later.
