The categories
The three things that decide whether lighting works
1. Colour temperature, not brightness. It is the first thing that will irritate you daily if you get it wrong. 2700K warm for living rooms and bedrooms, 4000K for kitchens and bathrooms, 6000K cool only for storerooms and outdoors.
2. Layers of light. A room with only a ceiling light is flat and uncomfortable. A room with ceiling, table and indirect lighting is transformed — and the cost of the difference is minimal.
3. Task light goes where you work. A kitchen worktop and a desk are always in your own shadow, because the ceiling light comes from behind. A strip under the cupboard or a table lamp solves a problem no ceiling fitting can.

- Which colour for which room?

- How many lumens equal a 60W bulb?
- Around 800 lumens. Watts show consumption, not light.
- Why is my kitchen worktop dark?
- Because the ceiling light comes from behind you and you shade the worktop. You need lighting under the cupboards.
- Do I need an electrician?
- For bulbs and strips no. For a new lighting point or altering an installation, yes.
