What access control solves

The problem with keys is not that they get lost — it is that they get copied and you never know who entered when.

An access control system gives three things a key cannot: you cancel a card in one second when an employee leaves, you set hours and days per person, and you have a log of who opened which door and when.

That is why it is equipment for businesses, offices, warehouses and shared entrances — not a domestic product. For a home, the equivalent is a smart lock.

The UniFi ecosystem

Ubiquiti does not sell isolated products — it sells a system. The reader, the door controller and the software work together, and alongside the UniFi cameras and network equipment from the same company.

The advantage is that one interface controls everything: who entered, what the camera recorded at that moment, who has rights to which door.

The trade-off is that you commit to an ecosystem. If you are planning an installation, that decision is taken at the start and not halfway through.

What to think about first

What happens in a power cut. It is the most critical question and it has a legal dimension. Doors differ: some unlock on power loss so people can get out, others stay locked for security. In public spaces, the emergency exit must always work — that is not a technical choice but a requirement.

Backup power. An access system needs a UPS, otherwise the first outage leaves the building without control.

Cabling. The equipment connects by network cable and is often powered over PoE. In an existing building, the cable route is the real cost of the project — not the devices.

This is an installation that needs design and a technician. Tell us what building and how many doors, and we will help specify it.

Frequently asked questions

Is it suitable for a home?
It is business equipment. For a home, the equivalent is a smart lock.
What happens in a power cut?
It depends on the door type. In public spaces, the emergency exit must always work. A UPS is also needed.
Can I cancel a card?
Immediately, from the software. It is the main advantage over keys, which get copied.
Does it work with other brands?
UniFi is a closed ecosystem. Design the installation from the start.
What is the real cost?
Usually the cabling rather than the devices — particularly in an existing building.
