What a laptop needs, in order

Something to carry it in. A bag with padding at the base comes first — a laptop takes knocks when you set the bag down, not while you hold it.

Something to keep it running. Chargers get lost, burn out or stay in another city; batteries wear out after three or four years. Both are replaced for a fraction of the cost of a new machine.

Something to raise it. If you work for hours in one place, a stand changes your posture and keeps the underside vents clear.

Something to connect it. A USB-C dock or hub turns a desk into a workstation with one cable: monitor, keyboard, network and charging together.

Before buying a new machine, look at these

Most laptops that "need replacing" actually have three specific problems, and all three are solvable. It is slow — it needs an SSD and memory. It holds no charge — it needs a new battery. It does not charge properly — it needs a charger.

All three together usually cost less than a quarter of a new machine and add two or three years of life. Just note that many thin models have soldered memory — if you are unsure, send us the exact model.

Frequently asked questions

Which accessory should I buy first?
A bag, if you move the machine. A dock, if you use it at a fixed desk with a monitor and keyboard.
How do I find the right charger or battery?
You need voltage, current and plug type for a charger, or the battery code. Both are on labels on the machine — or send us the exact model.
How do I choose the right bag size?
For a fitted sleeve, measure the laptop length and width in millimetres. For a backpack, the machine’s inch rating is enough.
Do cooling pads really help?
Mainly they keep the underside vents clear and improve posture. You should not expect a dramatic drop in temperature.
Can my laptop be upgraded?
It depends on the model — many thin machines have soldered memory. Send us the exact code and we will check.

Choose a category above. And if the machine has simply tired, start with an SSD, a battery and memory — together a fraction of a new laptop.
