Why not household glass cleaner
Current displays — computer, laptop, television — have anti-glare and oleophobic coatings. Ordinary glass cleaners contain ammonia or alcohol at concentrations that dissolve those coatings over time.
The result does not show the first time. It shows after months, as cloudy patches or an uneven surface that nothing will clean. It is irreversible.
The rule: never spray directly onto the screen — always onto the cloth. Liquid running to the edge gets under the bezel and stays there.
Compressed air
It is the tool for keyboards, fans and laptop vents — where dust collects in places you cannot reach.
Two things to know: keep the can upright, because tilted it releases liquid propellant that freezes the surface. And on a computer fan, hold the blades still with a finger while blowing — if they spin under pressure, the fan acts as a generator and can send current into the motherboard.
What is worth keeping in the office
A screen spray with a microfibre cloth for weekly cleaning, a can of compressed air for the keyboard every couple of months, and wipes for a quick pass.
In a business with many workstations, regular cleaning is not about appearance: dust in a laptop’s vents causes overheating, and overheating cuts performance before you work out why.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I use glass cleaner?
- No. Ammonia and alcohol gradually dissolve the screen coatings. The damage is permanent and shows after months.
- Do I spray onto the screen?
- Never. Always onto the cloth. Liquid running to the edge gets under the bezel.
- Is compressed air safe on a computer?
- Yes, on two conditions: keep the can upright, and stop the fan blades with a finger before blowing.
- How often should I clean?
- Screen weekly, keyboard every two months, laptop vents twice a year — more often if there are pets in the room.
Ten minutes of cleaning a month keeps thousands of euro of equipment in good condition. Start with a spray and cloth and a can of compressed air.
