The right order of upgrading

This is the most useful information in the whole category, because most people start in the wrong place.

Speakers first. The factory speakers in a base-specification car are the weakest link — cheap paper cones that distort as soon as you turn it up. Replacing them gives the greatest audible difference per euro.

Then the amplifier. Good speakers powered by the head unit only partly deliver. An amplifier gives them the power they need — and clean sound at volume comes from adequate power, not from turning the dial up.

A subwoofer last, if you want one. It adds the low end no door speaker produces.

The reverse — an amplifier on factory speakers — simply burns them out faster.

Coaxial or component?

Coaxial. Everything in one speaker. They fit in the factory positions with no modification — the simple, economical and correct choice for most people.

Component. The tweeter is separate and mounts high, on the pillar or dashboard. It gives a far better stereo image — the sound comes from in front of you, not from your knees. But it requires installation.

The size has to match: send us the model and year and we will tell you what diameter your doors take and whether adapters are needed.

Two things that make a difference and cost nothing

Door deadening. A car door is a metal box that vibrates. A little deadening material behind the speaker improves the bass more than a more expensive speaker — because it stops the vibration that cancels the sound.

Correct cable gauge. An amplifier with thin power cable does not perform and runs hot. It is a safety point, not just a quality one — and an amplifier needs a fuse close to the battery.

Installing an amplifier in a car requires a direct battery connection and proper earthing. If you have never done it, it is a job for a technician.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I start?
With the speakers. The factory ones are the weakest link and replacing them gives the greatest difference per euro.
Do I need an amplifier?
After the speakers, yes. Clean sound at volume comes from adequate power, not from turning the dial up.
Coaxial or component?
Coaxial for simple replacement with no modification. Component for a far better stereo image, with installation.
Will they fit my doors?
Send us the car model and year and we will tell you what diameter they take and whether adapters are needed.
What does door deadening change?
It improves the bass more than a more expensive speaker, because it stops the metal panel vibrating.

Speakers first, amplifier second — and do not skip door deadening. It is the cheapest part with the greatest effect.
