DS / 3DS Games
Nintendo DS & 3DS Games
The handhelds that outsold everything else. Two things to know before buying: DS games play on a 3DS, and 3DS games are region locked.
- DS plays on 3DS: compatibility runs backward, not the other way.
- The 3DS is region locked: a card from another region will not play — check the edition.
- The DS is not: DS cards work on any DS-family console.
- The eShop has closed: physical cards are now the only route to many titles.
What are you after?
The region lock
This causes more trouble than anything else here. The Nintendo 3DS is region locked: a European console will not play American or Japanese 3DS cards. Before buying, make sure the edition matches your console.
The Nintendo DS has no such restriction — DS cards play on any console in the family, from any market. And because the 3DS reads DS cards, a DS card is the safest purchase.

Frequently asked questions
- Do DS games play on a 3DS?
- Yes. The 3DS and 2DS read DS cards normally. The reverse is not true: a 3DS card will not play on an older DS.
- Are they region locked?
- 3DS games are — a European console will not play American or Japanese cards. DS games have no restriction at all.
- What is the difference between 2DS and 3DS?
- The 2DS plays the same games without the stereoscopic 3D display. Card compatibility is identical.
- Do they play on a Switch?
- No. The Switch is not compatible with DS or 3DS cards — it is an entirely different platform.
- Why buy a physical card?
- Because Nintendo eShop for these consoles has closed. For many titles, a physical card is now the only route.
- Do I need a stylus?
- Many games use the touch screen. A stylus comes with the console but is easily lost — replacements are available.
- Can I collect my order from the shop?
- Yes, choose collection at checkout, with no shipping cost.
A DS card plays on both a DS and a 3DS, from any region. If you are unsure which console the recipient owns, it is the gift with no risk.
