Why the microphone matters more than the camera
On a conference call or in a video, people forgive a mediocre picture but cannot tolerate bad sound. Room noise, echo and a distant voice tire a listener within minutes.
A laptop’s built-in microphone sits next to the fans and far from your mouth — two reasons that guarantee a mediocre result. A separate microphone, even a simple one, solves both simply by being closer.
Which type you need
Desk microphone. It sits in front of you on a stand or arm. The obvious choice for streaming, podcasting and calls from a fixed position.
Lavalier microphone. Small, clips to your clothing, and stays the same distance from your mouth even as you move. Ideal for video, presentations and teaching.
Wireless system. A transmitter on you and a receiver on the camera or computer. For filming and presentations where you want no cable.
Two things that improve sound for free
Distance. The closer to your mouth, the less room noise. It is the single biggest improvement and it costs nothing.
The room. Bare walls create echo. A curtain, a rug or a bookshelf behind you changes the sound more than a more expensive microphone.
And one technical note: if the microphone catches your "p" and "t" sounds explosively, you need a windshield or pop filter — a small part with a large effect.

Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a microphone or is my headset enough?
- For work calls it is enough. For streaming, podcasting and recording, a separate microphone makes an immediately noticeable difference.
- USB or XLR?
- USB connects straight to a computer and works immediately. XLR needs an audio interface and is aimed at more professional use.
- Why can I hear room noise?
- Usually because the microphone is too far away. Move closer and the noise drops dramatically with no settings changed.
- What is a lavalier microphone?
- A small microphone that clips to your clothing and keeps a constant distance from your mouth, even as you move.
