Which type to choose
In-ear with a charging case — the most practical for daily use. They fit in a pocket, the case adds extra charges, and the better models include noise cancellation. Mind the fit: if they fall out, try a different ear tip size.
Over-ear — better sound, better isolation, longer battery life. The right choice for planes, trains and long hours in an open-plan office.
Open-ear and bone conduction — for running and road cycling, where you need to hear traffic.
Shokz: why these get a section of their own
Bone conduction headphones do not go into the ear. They rest on the cheekbone in front of the ear and carry sound as vibration straight to the inner ear. The ear canal stays completely open.
In practice you hear music and, at the same time, cars, bicycles and people — which is why they have become the standard among runners and urban cyclists. Bass quality is lower than a sealed in-ear; it is a trade you make deliberately for safety.
Sena and Cardo: motorcycle intercoms
An entirely different product from everything else on this page. They fit inside the helmet with speakers in the padding and a microphone in front of the mouth, allowing conversation with a pillion or with other bikes in the group over hundreds of metres.
Current models also pair with your phone, so you hear navigation without looking at a screen — the most important safety benefit of all.
What to check
Noise cancellation: active ANC removes steady engine and air-conditioning noise, and quality varies widely between models. Microphones: if you make many calls, the number and quality of microphones matters more than the sound — this is where Jabra stands out.
Battery life: look separately at the hours from the earbuds and the total with the case. Sweat resistance: for the gym and running you need an explicit rating.

Frequently asked questions
- Will I sound clear on calls?
- That depends on the microphones rather than the sound. Models with multiple microphones and voice noise suppression — such as the Jabra ranges — stand out here.
- Are headphones safe for road running?
- Sealed in-ear models reduce awareness of your surroundings. For the road, prefer open-ear or bone conduction so you can hear cars and bicycles.
- What is the difference between noise cancellation and isolation?
- Isolation is passive, from the earpiece itself. Noise cancellation is active: microphones hear the outside noise and produce an opposing wave. It works better on steady noise than on voices.
- Can I connect to two devices at once?
- Many current models support simultaneous connection to two devices, for example a phone and a computer. It is stated in the specifications.
- What warranty do they carry?
- 323 of the 479 products carry a 24-month warranty. The exact term is stated on each product.
Choose the type by where you will wear them: sealed for travel and the office, open for the road, an intercom for the bike. And if you want zero latency, see the wired sets.
