Start from the use, not the specifications

Office, study, browsing. What matters is comfort rather than power: a good screen, a comfortable keyboard, decent battery life, 16GB of memory and an SSD. Such a machine will serve you for years without you thinking about it.

Gaming. You need a dedicated graphics card, a high-refresh display and serious cooling. Note that these machines are heavier, noisy under load and only perform fully when plugged in.

Creative work. Priority to the display — colour accuracy and brightness — and to 32GB of memory. The processor matters more than the graphics card in editing and photography.

The three things that will annoy you if ignored

1. The memory may be soldered. Many thin models can never be upgraded. If you buy a machine with 8GB and soldered memory, it will frustrate you in two years and there will be nothing you can do. Check before, not after.

2. The screen is most of the experience. You look at it eight hours a day. Low brightness and poor colours genuinely tire you, and a glossy panel becomes a mirror in a bright room.

3. Weight decides whether you carry it. A two-kilo machine looks reasonable on paper and heavy on your back after a week. If you travel daily, give weight real weight.

What to check in the specifications

Memory — 16GB is the comfort point today, 32GB for creative work. Drive — always an SSD, with 512GB as the practical minimum. Ports — check for USB-C that charges the machine, because it simplifies your whole life to one cable.

Keyboard — if you write a lot, a backlight is no luxury. Battery — quoted hours are always optimistic; expect less in real use at half brightness.

Frequently asked questions about laptops

How much memory do I need?
16GB for comfortable daily use, 32GB for video and creative work. 8GB is now marginal — and on many models it can never be upgraded.
Can the memory and drive be upgraded?
It depends on the model. Many thin laptops have soldered memory. Send us the exact model if you would like us to check.
Do I need a dedicated graphics card?
For gaming and heavy creative work yes. For office use, video and browsing, the integrated graphics of current processors are comfortably enough.
How long does the battery really last?
Less than the quoted hours, which are measured in ideal conditions. In real use at medium brightness expect noticeably less.
What warranty do they carry?
377 models carry a 36-month warranty and 569 carry 24 months. It is stated on each product.

Choose based on what you will do and how much you will carry it — and check whether the memory is upgradable before buying. Along with the machine, a bag is the first thing you will need.
