Paper weight

It is measured in grams per square metre and is the first thing that changes the feel. 80 gsm is the office standard: economical, suitable for any printer, fine for work documents.

From 90 to 120 gsm the paper becomes noticeably more substantial — for quotations, presentations and documents you hand to a client. Above 160 we are talking covers, postcards and business cards.

Note: every printer has a weight limit it can feed. Heavy paper in a machine that does not accept it means jams.

Photo paper: glossy or matte?

Glossy — vivid colours and deep blacks, like classic lab prints. But it shows fingerprints and reflects light.

Matte — a softer result with no reflections, ideal for framing behind glass and for images with a lot of text.

Both require an inkjet printer — photo paper must never go into a laser, because its coating melts in the heat and destroys the machine.

Practical notes that save prints

Store paper flat and sealed. Paper absorbs moisture, and damp paper sticks, jams and prints blurred.

Do not fill the tray to the top. The feed mechanism works better with room, and double feeds drop dramatically.

Fan the stack before loading it. Ten seconds that eliminate half of all jams.
