Nintendo Switch 2 Games
Nintendo Switch 2 Games
The new Nintendo generation. The Switch 2 also plays first-generation Switch games, so your collection is not wasted — but there is one thing to check on the packaging.
- It plays the old ones: compatibility with first-generation cartridges is retained.
- Cartridge or game-key card: two different things — read the box.
- A new memory card: the Switch 2 needs microSD Express for storage.
- Region free: as with the first Switch.
What are you after?
Cartridge or game-key card?
The Switch 2 has two kinds of physical release and the difference matters. A standard cartridge contains the game, as always. A game-key card does not: it acts as a key that unlocks a download, so it needs an internet connection and free space on the console.
Both can be resold or lent, but a game-key card must be inserted every time you play. We state which is which in each product description.
Worth knowing
- Backward compatibility — the Switch 2 reads first-generation Switch cartridges — your existing collection works.
- Memory card — digital titles and game-key cards need microSD Express, not ordinary microSD.
- Storage — new-generation titles are larger, so space runs out faster.
- PEGI — the age rating is on the box, as always.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the Switch 2 play old Switch games?
- Yes, it reads first-generation Switch cartridges for the vast majority of titles. Your existing collection is not wasted.
- What is a game-key card?
- A physical card that does not contain the game but unlocks its download. It needs an internet connection for the first install and free space on the console.
- How does it differ from a normal cartridge?
- A cartridge contains the game and plays immediately. A game-key card requires a one-time download but must stay in the console while you play.
- Do I need a new memory card?
- Yes, if you store digital games. The Switch 2 requires microSD Express, a faster standard than ordinary microSD.
- Do Switch 2 games work on the first Switch?
- No. Compatibility runs backward only — the new console plays the old games, not the reverse.
- Is there a region lock?
- No, as with the first Switch, cartridges work from any market.
- Can I collect my order from the shop?
- Yes, choose collection at checkout, with no shipping cost.
If it says game-key card, the game downloads and needs space. If it is a standard cartridge, it plays straight away. Both are physical copies — they simply work differently.
