What a NAS solves
Backups that happen by themselves. This is the most important one. A backup that depends on you remembering to plug in a drive never happens. A NAS works in the background, every day.
Shared storage. Files live in one place and everyone sees them — computers, phones, television. No more emailing files to yourself.
Your own space. No monthly subscription and no data on someone else’s equipment. For businesses with sensitive files, that is often decisive.
What to know first
Drives are usually not included. A NAS is sold as an enclosure with one, two or more bays. You choose the drives — and for continuous operation you need drives designed for NAS use, not ordinary desktop ones.
Two drives does not mean double the space. If you configure them for safety, one holds a copy of the other: you gain protection from drive failure, not capacity.
A NAS is not a backup by itself. If something happens to the house or office, both copies are lost together. Keep a third copy off site.
