Three different needs, three different answers

The category looks unified but is not. Start from what actually concerns you.

"I want to see what is happening." Cameras and a recorder. That is oversight and evidence — they show what happened, they do not stop it from happening.

"I want to keep people out." An alarm with detectors and a siren. That is deterrence — a loud siren drives intruders off within seconds.

"I want to control my home." Smart home — locks, thermostats, lights and automation.

And one need that is not about security from people but is the most important of all: smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. They cost less than everything else here and are the only ones that save lives.

The categories

Two things that apply across the whole category

Change every factory password. Camera, recorder, lock, hub — all of them. Default passwords are publicly known, and a security system on a factory password is a door rather than a lock. Keep the firmware updated too.

Think about what happens without power. A system that dies with the supply does not protect at the moment you need it — and cutting the supply is among the first things anyone would do. A backup battery in the panel, a UPS on the recorder.

Frequently asked questions

Cameras or an alarm?
Different roles. Cameras document what happened, an alarm deters. A serious installation has both.
Where do I start?
With smoke detectors — they cost very little and are the only ones that save lives. Then according to what concerns you.
Do I need a professional?
For Wi-Fi cameras and smart devices, not necessarily. For alarms, access control and mains relays, yes.
What happens in a power cut?
Ask for a backup battery in the panel and a UPS on the recorder. Without them, the system dies exactly when it is needed.
Do you issue invoices?
Yes, for businesses and installation technicians.

Start from what concerns you — oversight, deterrence or control. And whatever you choose, change the factory passwords on day one.
