The three things that void a purchase
Length. Current high-performance cards are large — often over 30 cm and two or three slots thick. Every case states a maximum graphics card length; check it before, not after.
Power supply. Having enough watts is not enough: it also needs the correct power connectors for the card. Newer high-performance cards use a new connector type, and if your supply lacks it you need an adapter or a new unit.
Monitor. There is no point in a card that delivers far more than your display can show. If you play at Full HD 60Hz, the money works harder on a better monitor than on a bigger card.
How much VRAM you need
Card memory holds textures, models and buffers. In practice: for Full HD 8GB is comfortable, for 1440p 12GB gives headroom, and for 4K or creative work 16GB and above is the safe choice.
Note that VRAM does not substitute for GPU speed. A slow card with plenty of memory is not better than a fast one with less — memory matters as you raise resolution and texture quality.
Cooling and noise
The same chip ships from many manufacturers with different cooling systems. Three-fan models are usually quieter under load, because they spread the work at lower speeds. Two-fan models fit smaller cases.
Many current cards stop their fans entirely at low load, so they are completely silent for desktop work.
