The UPS did not fail — the battery aged
It is the most common scenario and the most expensive mistake. A UPS three or four years old starts to beep, show a red indicator or shut down the moment power is cut. People conclude it has failed and buy a new one.
In the overwhelming majority of cases the electronics are perfectly fine and the only worn part is the lead-acid battery — a consumable with a typical life of three to five years. Replacing it costs a fraction of a new UPS.
How to find the right one
You need three details, all printed on the old battery: the voltage (usually 12V), the capacity in Ah, and the dimensions with the terminal type.
Capacity must be equal or slightly higher — never lower. The dimensions must fit the compartment, and the terminal must match the existing cables.
Some UPS units have two or four batteries in series. Replace them all together, never just one: the old one drags the new one down and you are back to the same problem within months.
Before you change it
Switch off and unplug the UPS before opening anything. Lead-acid batteries deliver very high current into a short circuit — a tool touching both terminals causes serious damage.
Photograph the cable order before removing anything. It is the one minute that saves you half an hour of doubt.
The old battery is recyclable. It does not go in the bin — it contains lead and acid, and there are collection points for exactly this type.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I know the battery is at fault?
- If the UPS beeps, shows a red indicator or shuts down the instant power is cut, while otherwise working, the battery is almost always the reason.
- How do I find which one I need?
- From the label on the old one: voltage in V, capacity in Ah, dimensions and terminal type. Capacity equal or slightly higher, never lower.
- How long does a UPS battery last?
- Usually three to five years. Heat ages it faster — a UPS in a closed cupboard lasts less.
- What if the UPS has two batteries?
- Replace them all together. One new beside one old ends in the same problem within months.
- What do I do with the old one?
- It is recycled. It contains lead and acid and must not go in household waste.
Before buying a new UPS, check the battery — in most cases it is all that is needed. Note the voltage, Ah and dimensions, and if in doubt send us the UPS model.
