The consumable matters more than the tool
It is the truth every tradesperson knows and every beginner discovers: a good drill with a worn bit drills worse than a mediocre one with a new bit.
The bit, the disc and the blade are the point that does the work — the tool merely turns them. And all of them wear out.
In practice: if the drill smokes, squeals or will not advance while you press, it is not the drill’s fault. The bit is blunt — and pressing harder burns out the tool rather than solving the problem.
And one that costs money: the right bit for the right material. A wood bit in concrete will not advance and is destroyed in seconds. Concrete needs a carbide-tipped bit and hammer action.
Tool batteries: the closed system
It is the most important decision with cordless tools, and it is made with the first tool, not the third.
Every manufacturer — DeWalt, Bosch, Makita, Greenworks — has its own battery system. One brand’s battery does not fit another’s tool, and third-party adapters are not a solution.
In practice that means you commit to an ecosystem. The good side: with two batteries you power ten tools from the same range, and subsequent tools are bought bare — without battery or charger, far more cheaply.
So: choose the brand before choosing the tool — based on what other tools exist in the range that you will need.
And on care: lithium batteries are not stored flat. For winter storage, around half charge — and not in an unheated store in freezing conditions.
Safety with cutting consumables
The disc must match the tool. Diameter, bore and — critically — maximum rotational speed. A disc with a lower speed rating than the tool can disintegrate in use. That is not a theoretical risk.
The right disc for the right material. A metal disc on stone wears out immediately; a stone disc on metal binds and kicks back.
A cracked or dropped disc is discarded. It is not tried "one last time".
Eye protection always. Cutting and drilling throw particles at speed — and eyes cannot be repaired.

Frequently asked questions
- Why will my drill not cut?
- Almost always a worn or wrong bit. Pressing harder burns out the tool rather than solving the problem.
- Will another brand’s battery fit?
- No. Every manufacturer has its own system — choose the brand before choosing the tool.
- Can I buy a tool without a battery?
- Yes, if you already have batteries from the same range. It is clearly cheaper.
- What should I check on a cutting disc?
- Diameter, bore and maximum speed. A disc rated below the tool’s speed can disintegrate in use.
- How do I store tool batteries?
- At around half charge, not flat, and not in freezing conditions.
Choose the battery system before choosing the tool — and replace bits and discs in good time. It is cheaper than burning out tools.
