Inkjet or laser? The only question that matters
It is not about quality — it is about what you print and how much.
Laser if you print mainly text: contracts, invoices, assignments, records. Cost per page is a fraction, one toner prints thousands of pages, and it does not dry out if left unused for weeks. For offices, accountancy practices and clinics, almost always the right choice.
Inkjet if you want colour and photographs, or if you print a little and rarely on a variety of media. Colour quality is superior and the machine costs less — but consumables cost more per page.
The practical rule: over 100 text pages a month, buy laser. The difference in consumables will exceed the difference in machine price within the first year.
The cost of a machine is not its price
It is the most misunderstood purchase in IT. A printer can cost very little and end up more expensive than one at twice the price, because its consumables cost almost as much as a new machine.
Before buying, do a one-minute check: see what the consumable costs and how many pages it prints. Divide, and you have the real cost per page. It is the only number that matters over three years.
Multifunction device or separate scanner?
A multifunction device prints, scans and copies from one body. For home and a small office it covers everything and takes the space of one machine instead of two.
A standalone scanner makes sense for volume digitisation — years of archives, medical files, accounting records. Scanners with an automatic document feeder scan dozens of pages without you standing over them, and are in a different speed class from the flatbed glass of a multifunction device.

- Laser for text in volume — lower cost per page and no drying out. Inkjet for colour, photography and occasional use on varied media.
- Why does a cheap printer turn out expensive?
- Because the cost sits in the consumables. Check what the cartridge costs and how many pages it prints — that is the real cost.
- My printer clogged after months of disuse.
- A classic inkjet problem: the ink dries in the heads. One colour print every couple of weeks prevents it. Lasers do not suffer from this.
- Do I need a separate scanner?
- Only for large-volume digitisation. For occasional scanning, a multifunction device is comfortably enough.
- Does it print from a phone?
- Most current models do, over Wi-Fi and an app. It is stated in the specifications.
