Sonic or oscillating?
The two technologies, as with shavers, are represented by two brands.
Oscillating (Braun / Oral-B). A small round head that rotates back and forth, one tooth at a time. It cleans very effectively around each tooth and is easy for anyone without good technique.
Sonic (Philips). An elongated head vibrating at very high frequency. Beyond mechanical contact, the vibrations move fluid between the teeth — it cleans where it does not touch. Gentler on sensitive gums.
Why it genuinely makes a difference
It is not a comfort matter. Electric toothbrushes remove more plaque than a manual brush, mainly because they solve the two most common mistakes.
First: time. Most people brush for less than a minute while believing they manage two. The built-in timer with quadrant alerts corrects that automatically.
Second: pressure. Hard scrubbing does not clean better — it wears enamel and causes gum recession. Models with a pressure sensor warn or cut out when you press too hard.
The real cost sits in the heads
As with shavers, the device is bought once and the heads are replaced every three months. Over three years, the cost of heads often exceeds the price of the toothbrush itself.
