The tool that comes first, before any other

In any electrical work, a tester is not a diagnostic tool — it is a safety tool.

The rule that is not negotiable: switch off at the main breaker and then confirm with an instrument that there really is no voltage. Both, in that order.

Why the first is not enough: in old or modified installations, the labelling on the board often does not match reality. The breaker marked "living room lights" may cut something else. The instrument is the only thing that tells the truth.

And a check on the instrument itself: test it first on a circuit you know is live. A tester with a dead battery shows "no voltage" in every case — and that is the dangerous scenario.

What a multimeter measures and where it helps

Three basic measurements cover almost every practical problem.

Voltage. Whether power is arriving. For sockets, circuits, batteries, power supplies.

Continuity. Whether a cable is broken inside its insulation. It is the measurement that finds the invisible problem — a cable that looks intact but has broken at a flex point.

Resistance. For checking components, heating elements and fuses.

In practice, with a multimeter you find: which fuse blew, which cable broke, whether the battery is dead and whether the power supply is delivering. Four problems otherwise solved by trial and error.

What to check when choosing

Measurement category. The most important and least known point. Instruments are classified into safety categories according to where they may be used. A cheap low-category instrument used on a consumer unit or supply line is a genuine hazard — it is not designed for the energy present there.

Probe quality. The leads and tips wear, and they are the point that contacts live voltage. Damaged insulation on a probe is replaced.

Auto-ranging. Practical for a non-technician — it avoids a wrong setting that can destroy the instrument.

Frequently asked questions

Is switching off at the breaker enough?
No. You must confirm with an instrument that there is no voltage — in old installations the board labelling often does not match.
How do I know the tester works?
Test it on a circuit you know is live. An instrument with a dead battery always shows "no voltage".
What is the measurement category?
It states where the instrument may be used. A low category on a consumer unit is a genuine hazard.
What can I find with a multimeter?
Which fuse blew, which cable broke, whether a battery is dead and whether a power supply is delivering.
Do I need auto-ranging?
If you are not a technician, it helps — it avoids a wrong setting that can destroy the instrument.

Before any electrical work: breaker off, confirm with an instrument. And test the instrument on a live circuit first.
