Thermal printing: why no ink is needed
A label printer has no ink cartridge. It prints with heat onto special paper that darkens where it is heated. That is why the only consumable is the tape or label roll.
In practice that means zero maintenance, no head to dry out, and a machine that works exactly the same if you leave it in a drawer for six months.
Which machine for which use
Handheld office label maker. With a built-in keyboard or a phone connection. For archives, folders, cables and organisation. Dymo and NiiMbot operate here.
Professional thermal printer. It connects to a computer or till system and prints label rolls at speed. Zebra is the standard in warehouses and dispatch — product labels, barcodes, courier labels.
Where it genuinely pays off
Warehouse. A label with a code and description on every shelf and box. The difference between finding something in ten seconds or ten minutes, multiplied by every day.
Dispatch. Courier labels printed directly, with no handwriting and no address errors.
Retail. Prices, codes, dates — uniform and legible.
Network installations. A label on every cable, saving hours each time something changes.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it need ink?
- No. Thermal label printers print with heat onto special paper. The only consumable is the tape or label roll.
- Does any tape fit any machine?
- No. Cartridges are specific to the manufacturer and often to the series. Check the model before ordering consumables.
- Does it print barcodes?
- Professional machines do, through software. Handheld office models often do too, in a simpler form.
- Do the labels survive damp?
- Plain paper ones do not. For a fridge, a damp warehouse or outdoors you need durable material.
- Does it connect to a phone?
- Many current models do, over Bluetooth and an app. It is stated in the specifications.
If you lose time working out what is where, a label printer pays for itself within weeks. And do not forget the tapes — they are the only thing you will reorder.
