Alkaline or rechargeable?
Alkaline — for devices that draw almost nothing and run for years on one pair: remote controls, wall clocks, smoke detectors, scales. Rechargeables make no sense there, because they would self-discharge before ever running out.
Rechargeable — for anything that drains often: console controllers, wireless mice and keyboards, toys, torches. One set that recharges hundreds of times replaces dozens of alkalines and is clearly cheaper over time.
One point that matters: current low self-discharge rechargeables hold their charge for months in a drawer. Older ones did not, which is why most people have a bad memory of them.
Practical notes that save money and devices
Do not mix old with new. In a device with two or four cells, the weakest sets the performance of all — and can overheat.
Remove them from devices you do not use. This is the number one cause of destruction: a forgotten alkaline in a remote or a toy leaks and corrodes the contacts, and the device cannot be saved.
Lithium CR cells — the "buttons" in watches, scales and computer motherboards — last a very long time and cannot be substituted by another type. Note the code down, because they all look alike.
The charger makes the difference
A cheap charger applies constant current and stops on a timer — which often means overcharging and shortened battery life. A proper charger detects when each cell is full and stops for each one separately.
If you intend to use rechargeables seriously, the charger is the investment that decides how long they last.

Frequently asked questions about batteries
- Rechargeable or alkaline?
- Rechargeable for anything that drains often — controllers, mice, toys. Alkaline for remotes and clocks that run for years on one pair.
- Do they lose charge in a drawer?
- Current low self-discharge cells hold for months. Older types drained quickly, which is where the bad reputation comes from.
- Why did the battery leak in my remote?
- Because it sat there empty for a long time. Alkalines leak and corrode the contacts. Remove them from devices you do not use.
- Can I mix old with new?
- No. The weakest cell sets the performance of all and can overheat. Always replace the whole set together.
- Which charger should I choose?
- One that detects when each cell is full individually. Simple timer chargers overcharge and shorten battery life.
For anything that drains monthly, a set of rechargeables with a proper charger pays for itself within the first year. For everything else, alkalines remain the sensible choice.
