- A permanent licence: not a subscription — you activate once.
- Upgrades too: from Windows 10 to 11 where supported.
What are you after?
Home or Pro?
- Windows 11 Home — covers home use fully: every application, gaming and browsing behave identically.
- Windows 11 Pro — adds BitLocker drive encryption, Remote Desktop hosting, Hyper-V and company domain join.
- In practice — if you work from home and connect remotely to your own PC, you want Pro. Otherwise Home is enough.
- Upgrade later — you can move from Home to Pro with an upgrade purchase, without reinstalling.
Before you buy
Windows 11 requirements. You need a 64-bit processor, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Most machines from 2018 onward have them, but it is worth checking first, especially on an older desktop.
Retail versus OEM. A retail licence transfers to a new computer if you change machine; an OEM licence binds permanently to the motherboard it first activated on. The type is stated on each product.
Installation needs a clean USB stick. Microsoft official Media Creation Tool builds it — at least 8 GB, and it erases whatever is on the drive.
