Shredders: the security level is not marketing

Shredders are classified into DIN security levels, and the difference is substantive — not commercial.

Strip cut. The basic level. Fast and cheap, but the pieces are large and theoretically reassemblable. Suitable for advertising material and documents of no consequence.

Cross cut. The practical standard for an office. It cuts in two directions, the pieces are small and reassembly is practically not worth attempting. For invoices, contracts, correspondence, payroll records.

Micro cut. The high level. For personal data, medical records, financial information and anything subject to data protection obligations.

The rule: if a document contains third-party personal data, it does not go in a strip cutter. Document destruction is part of compliance, not a matter of tidiness.

What kills a shredder

Shredders are among the appliances that fail from misuse, not from age. Three things are almost always to blame.

1. Overloading. Every machine states how many sheets at a time. Forcing double jams the mechanism — and repeated overloading destroys the gears. HSM is known precisely for its durability here.

2. Paperclips and staples. Some machines accept them, most do not. Check — a paperclip in the wrong machine damages the blades.

3. Lack of lubrication. The most overlooked point. The blades need shredder oil every time you empty the bin. Without lubrication the machine strains, overheats and shuts down.

And a reality: every shredder has a continuous run cycle. After a few minutes it stops to cool. If you have an archive to destroy, you need a professional-grade machine — otherwise you will spend more time waiting.

Binding and laminating

Binding. For proposals, studies, dissertations, manuals. A bound document is read and kept differently from a stack of pages with a clip — and in a professional proposal, that matters.

Laminating. For signs, price lists, cards and anything handled constantly. A laminated sign lasts years rather than weeks — and in a shop or workshop it also survives moisture and grease.

A practical point on laminating: let the machine warm up before the first sheet. A sheet run through a cold machine comes out with bubbles and cannot be saved.
