The three things to check
1. Socket. The processor must match the motherboard. Newer Ryzen chips use AM5 with DDR5 memory, earlier ones AM4 with DDR4. On Intel the socket changes more often, so always check the specific generation.
2. Cooler. Many processors do not include a cooler in the box — particularly high-performance models. If yours does not, you need a separate one rated for its thermal output.
3. Integrated graphics. If you do not plan to fit a graphics card, you need a processor with an integrated GPU — otherwise the system produces no picture at all. Many high-performance chips have none.
How much processor you actually need
Office and browsing — a current four or six core chip with integrated graphics covers everything, with no graphics card and no noise.
Gaming — here the graphics card does the main work. A mid-range six or eight core processor is usually enough; the money works harder in the GPU.
Creative work and compiling — this is where cores genuinely matter. Video, 3D rendering and code compilation scale almost linearly with core count.
AMD or Intel?
Both make excellent processors at every price point, and which line leads changes from generation to generation. In practice the decision comes down to three things: which motherboard you will buy, whether you need integrated graphics, and which model offers the best value at the moment you buy.
One point in favour of AMD’s AM5 platform is longevity: the same socket has supported more generations, which means easier future upgrades without changing the board.

- On several models yes, on many high-performance ones no. It is stated in the product specifications — and if none is included, you need a separate cooler.

- Six to eight current cores comfortably cover gaming. Beyond that the difference shows mainly in creative work rather than in games.
- Can I upgrade later without a new motherboard?
- It depends on how long the socket is supported. Long-lived platforms allow a processor change on the same board, often after a BIOS update.
