What NeeDoh is
A NeeDoh is a sensory hand toy: a thin, soft skin filled with a non-toxic, dough-like compound. Squeeze it, pull it, smush it — and it returns to its original shape on its own. It does not break open, it is not sticky and it leaves no residue.
They are made by the American company Schylling, based in North Andover, Massachusetts. The company was founded in 1975 by Jack Schylling, who started out selling mechanical toys as a street vendor at Faneuil Hall in Boston. Its portfolio also includes classics such as Lava Lamp, Big Wheel and Sea-Monkeys.
The line launched in 2017 with a single product, "NeeDoh, The Groovy Glob". It now runs to more than 50 different styles, across shapes, sizes and textures.
About the name: it plays on "you knead" — and, at the same time, on "you need".
The ranges — how they differ
Classic NeeDoh (6 cm)
The original Groovy Glob. A soft skin with a compound that shifts slowly inside it. If you have never tried one, start here.
Color Changing (6 cm)
The same feel as the Classic, but the surface shifts shade with the warmth of your hands. The one children react to most.
Mello Mallo (6 cm)
A softer, marshmallow-like texture rather than a dough-like one. Also colour changing.
Nice Cube (5 cm)
Square, with a denser filling and a slow return to its perfect cube shape. Available in Glitter & Glow and Glow in the Dark. It is the most searched-for NeeDoh in the world.
Niceberg (8 cm)
The large version of the Nice Cube, with a clear crystalline look. More material in the hand and slower movement.
Dream Drop (8 cm)
Heavier and lazier on the return — for anyone who prefers the slow feel to the elastic one.
Cool Cats (11 cm)
A cat rather than a ball, and the largest in the range. It doubles as a desk object.

Drop shaped, with a distinctly elastic behaviour when stretched.
What is inside and why they work
The filling is a non-toxic compound that behaves somewhere between a liquid and a solid: it gives way slowly under pressure and recovers on its own. That delay is what makes a NeeDoh more satisfying than an ordinary stress ball — foam snaps back instantly, while here you watch the shape rebuild itself.
They belong to the fidget family: objects that keep the hands busy while attention is elsewhere. They are used in classrooms, offices and sensory rooms, and the audience is not only children — Schylling itself cites teens, adults, collectors and grandparents.

Safety & care
A NeeDoh is durable but not indestructible, and there are three things the manufacturer explicitly asks you to avoid.
- Ages 3 and up. Contains small parts; not for infants or children who put objects in their mouths.
- Do not heat it, do not freeze it and never put it in a microwave. Injury can result.
- It is not a chew toy. The skin takes squeezing and stretching, not teeth or sharp nails.
- Cleaning: lukewarm water and mild soap, dried thoroughly. Avoid alcohol and strong cleaners.
For parents: social media "challenges" involving squishy toys — heating them or opening them up — surface from time to time. It is worth a word with your child: a NeeDoh is for squeezing, nothing else.
