How many mAh you need
5,000 mAh — half to one full charge. Pocket-sized, ideal for a day in town or as a backup in a bag.
10,000 mAh — one to two full phone charges. The most balanced size and what most people choose.
20,000 mAh and above — three to four charges, or laptop charging if it has a high-power USB-C output. For camping, festivals and long trips.
One practical note: real-world output is always lower than the rated mAh, because energy is lost in voltage conversion. A 10,000 mAh pack realistically gives about 1.5 charges on a current phone.
Magnetic units: the big change
The 114 magnetic power banks snap onto the back of the phone with MagSafe magnets and charge wirelessly, with no cable. The phone stays usable in your hand while charging, which is the whole point when you are on the move.
They work on iPhone 12 and later, and on Android if you have a case with magnets. With a case that has no magnets the pack will not hold — see the MagSafe cases.
What else to check
Output power: an 18W or 20W pack with Power Delivery charges a phone quickly; a 10W one takes twice as long. Ports: two outputs let you charge a phone and earbuds together. Built-in cable: some models carry one on board, so there is nothing to forget.
For air travel: power banks are allowed in cabin baggage only, never in checked luggage, and usually up to 100Wh — which comfortably covers even 20,000 mAh packs.

Frequently asked questions about power banks
- How many times will it charge my phone?
- Divide the pack’s mAh by your battery’s mAh and subtract roughly 30% for conversion losses. A 10,000 mAh pack realistically gives 1.5 charges on a current phone.
- Will a magnetic power bank hold with my case on?
- Only if the case has MagSafe magnets. On a case without magnets it will not hold securely, even if the phone underneath has them.
- Can I take it on a plane?
- Yes, but in cabin baggage only — never in checked luggage. Most airlines cap it at 100Wh, which covers 20,000 mAh packs.
- Will it charge a laptop?
- Only models with a high-power USB-C output, usually 45W and above. Check the specifications on each product.
- How long does a power bank hold its charge in a drawer?
- It loses charge gradually. Good practice is to top it up every three months or so, so it never sits completely empty.
A power bank is the accessory you do not think about until the moment you need it. If you have an iPhone 12 or later, look at the magnetic ones first — and make sure your case has MagSafe.
