Why a cheap charger is not enough
With navigation running, the screen on, Bluetooth connected and music playing, a phone draws serious power. A 5W charger supplies less than the device spends, so the battery drops while it is plugged in — the most common complaint on long drives.
A charger with Power Delivery at 20W or more solves it: the phone genuinely charges even with navigation running.
One port or two?
Two ports mean the passenger can charge as well, or that you power a phone and a dashcam together. Note that output is shared — a 30W unit with two devices does not give 30W to each.
Current chargers have USB-C for fast charging and often one USB-A for older cables. If your car already has a USB port on the dashboard, it is almost always slow — a socket charger delivers many times the power.

- Why does my battery drop while charging in the car?
- Because navigation with the screen on consumes more than a low-power charger supplies. You need a Power Delivery model of 20W or more, and a cable rated for it.
- Is the car’s own USB port better?
- Almost never. Factory ports are usually 5W and intended for data rather than fast charging. A socket charger delivers many times the power.
- Will it drain the car battery if I leave it in?
- On most cars the socket cuts power with the ignition. On those that stay live, a charger with nothing connected draws very little but not zero — remove it if the car sits unused for a long time.
- Does it fit a truck or a motorcycle?
- Socket chargers run on 12V. Trucks often use 24V, so you need a model that explicitly states 12-24V.
