Why a rack rather than a shelf
A rack is not a luxury once the equipment exceeds two devices. Three things change: equipment ventilates properly instead of being stacked, cabling is organised so you know where each cable goes, and maintenance access happens from the front without disconnecting anything else.
The fourth is security: a locked cabinet keeps equipment away from dust, water and curious hands — in a shop or office that is no small matter.
What to check
Depth. The most common mistake. A switch fits a shallow cabinet, a server does not. Measure your deepest device and add room for cabling behind.
Height in units. Equipment is measured in rack units. Always leave one or two free for future expansion and for airflow.
Ventilation. In a closed cabinet with active equipment, ventilation is not optional. Check whether there are fan positions.

Frequently asked questions
- What cabinet depth do I need?
- Measure your deepest device and add room for cabling behind. Switches fit shallow cabinets, servers do not.
- Does it need ventilation?
- In a closed cabinet with active equipment, yes. Check whether there are fan positions.
- Can it be wall mounted?
- There are wall cabinets for small installations and floor cabinets for larger ones. Mind the weight the wall will carry.
- How many rack units should I buy?
- Add up your equipment and leave one or two free for expansion and airflow.
If network equipment has started stacking up on a shelf, a rack solves ventilation, order and security at once. See the switches that will go inside.
