Where a physical medium is still needed
Delivery to a public authority or court. Many procedures require files on physical media with a delivery record — a link is not accepted.
Archiving without dependencies. A properly stored disc holds data for years with no power, no subscription and no service that might shut down. That is not theoretical: cloud services have closed, and drives fail.
Older equipment. Medical machines, security cameras and industrial systems that write straight to disc and are not replaced because they work.
How to store them properly
Upright, not stacked. Weight warps the disc over time.
Away from light and heat. The recording layer is light sensitive — a disc on a sunny shelf loses data long before one in a drawer.
Write on it with a permanent marker, never with a pen or pencil — pressure destroys the recording layer from the label side.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does the data last?
- Years, provided the disc is stored upright, away from light and heat. Poor storage is the main enemy.
- Can I write on them with a pen?
- No. Only with a permanent marker and a light hand. Pressure from a pen destroys the recording layer.
- Do I need a special printer for discs?
- Only if you want a printed label on the surface. For simple labelling a marker is enough.
- My laptop has no disc drive.
- You need an external USB drive — it connects and works immediately.
As a third copy alongside a drive and the cloud, physical media still makes sense. And for storage, see the cases.
