Which device solves which problem
Router — the heart of the network. It connects to the line, hands out addresses, manages traffic and broadcasts Wi-Fi. A home needs one.
Switch — it adds wired ports. It does nothing else and needs no configuration on simple models: plug it in and it works.
Access point — it adds Wi-Fi at a spot a cable can reach. The right solution for a large house or office, because it loses no speed.
Repeater — it rebroadcasts the existing signal wirelessly. Simpler to install than an access point, but it shares airtime, so speed drops.
Powerline — it sends the network through the electrical wiring. The answer when a concrete slab or thick wall stops you running a cable.

Frequently asked questions
- Access point or repeater?
- An access point if you can run a cable to the spot — you lose no speed. A repeater if you cannot, at the cost of reduced speed.
- Do I need a switch if I already have a router?
- Only if you have run out of ports. Most home routers have four — a switch extends them as far as you need.
- Does powerline work in every home?
- In most, but performance depends on the electrical installation. On old wiring or across different phases it can be noticeably lower.
- What warranty do they carry?
- It varies widely by manufacturer and range — from 12 months to five years on professional equipment. It is stated on each product.
