Comics & graphic novels
Western editions come in several formats, and the difference matters when you are building a collection:
The formats
- Single issue — the individual comic, thin and collectible. Cover condition matters.
- Trade paperback (TPB) — a softcover volume collecting a complete story — the easiest way into a series.
- Omnibus — a hardcover doorstop of several hundred pages, usually covering a whole era of a run.
- Deluxe / Absolute — oversized format, quality paper, extra material and sketches. The shelf editions.
Manga
Japanese manga are published in volumes (tankobon) collecting a series chapter by chapter. You will find single volumes, omnibus editions combining two or three volumes, and box sets holding a complete series.
Two things surprise newcomers: manga are read right to left, as published in Japan — the book opens from what a Western reader would call the back. And they are classified by audience rather than genre: shonen for a young male readership, shojo for a young female one, seinen and josei for adults.

- What language are the editions in?
- English. Art books, comics and manga are published internationally in their English edition. The language is always stated on each product.
- What is the difference between a trade paperback and an omnibus?
- A trade paperback is a softcover volume collecting one complete story — ideal for starting a series. An omnibus is hardcover and far larger, with hundreds of pages covering a whole era.
- How are manga read?
- Right to left, as published in Japan. The book opens from what a Western reader would consider the back, and panels follow the same direction. Most editions carry a note on the last page.
- What do shonen, shojo and seinen mean?
- They describe the intended readership rather than the genre: shonen for a young male audience, shojo for a young female one, seinen and josei for adults.
