Why the case matters
A disc without a case is a disc that will be lost. Scratches on the underside prevent reading, and dust makes the drive struggle even on a clean surface.
More serious, though, is light: the recording layer of a writable disc is light sensitive. A disc left exposed in a bright room loses data far faster than one kept in a case in a drawer.
Which type for which use
