What actually differentiates a kettle
The concealed element. In current kettles the element sits beneath a flat base rather than in the water. It cleans easily, does not scale in the same way, and leaves no taste.
The material. Stainless steel is the most durable and imparts no taste. Glass lets you see the level and looks good, but shows limescale. Plastic costs less and is lighter.
Temperature control. Not a luxury if you drink tea: green tea scorches at 100 degrees and turns bitter. Kettles with temperature selection solve exactly that — and they are essential for hand-brewed filter coffee.
Limescale: the real enemy
In Greece the water is hard in many areas. Limescale settles on the element, reduces efficiency and eventually burns the kettle out. It is the number one reason a kettle does not reach five years.
The fix costs almost nothing: descaling with vinegar or a dedicated product every one to two months. Ten minutes that triple the life of the appliance.
And a practical tip: do not boil more water than you need. It costs electricity and leaves water standing inside, which accelerates scaling.
