Three different appliances
Sandwich maker with sealing plates. It closes and seals the toastie, creating the classic triangular pockets. Whatever is inside stays inside — which makes it the choice for filled toasties with melting cheese.
Grill with flat or ridged plates. It does not seal, it grills. It makes toasties but also meat, vegetables and fish, so it is far more versatile. Models with removable plates go in the dishwasher.
Toaster. It browns slices; it does not make filled toasties. Two slots for a couple, four for a family or an office.
What actually makes the difference
Removable plates. This is the feature that decides whether you will use the appliance. Fixed plates are cleaned with a damp cloth and something always remains — removable ones go in the dishwasher.
Non-stick coating. Without it, overflowing cheese becomes permanent. And a note: never metal utensils on the plates — one scratch and the coating starts to go.
Temperature control. On a grill, it is the difference between properly cooked and burnt outside, raw inside — particularly with meat.
Toasters: what to check
Slot width. Narrow slots do not take thick slices of homemade bread or brioche. If you do not eat only standard sliced bread, check it.
Defrost function. Useful if you keep bread in the freezer — it toasts properly without burning the outside.
Crumb tray. Without one, crumbs collect inside and eventually smoke. A small detail with large practical importance.

Frequently asked questions
- Sandwich plates or a grill?
- Sandwich plates if you want classic sealed toasties. A grill if you also want to cook meat or vegetables.
- Can the plates be washed?
- Only removable ones. It is the feature that decides whether you use the appliance or leave it in a cupboard.
- Will a thick slice fit the toaster?
- It depends on the slot width. Narrow ones do not take homemade bread or brioche.
- Why does the cheese stick?
- Either the non-stick coating has worn, or metal utensils were used. Use wooden or plastic ones.
- Two or four slots?
- Two for a couple, four for a family or an office, where breakfast happens simultaneously.
Choose based on what you cook: sealed toasties or meat as well. And if you want plates you can wash, ask explicitly for removable ones.
