Why steam cleans differently
Steam works in two ways at once. It dissolves grease with heat — which is why it lifts baked-on fat from an oven or hob without scrubbing. And it neutralises germs through high temperature, with no bleach.
That makes it particularly useful in three cases: a home with a baby or pets, where you do not want chemical residue on the floor; people with allergies, because steam also acts on dust mites in mattresses and sofas; and tile grout, where no amount of mopping reaches.
Where it genuinely delivers
Bathroom. Limescale, mould in grout, the shower, the tiles. It is the job where a steam cleaner earns its price.
Kitchen. Oven, extractor, hob, behind appliances. Grease softens and lifts in one pass.
Mattresses and fabrics. Sofas, mattresses, car upholstery. It freshens and neutralises odours without soaking them the way washing would.
Windows and glass with the right attachment, alongside a squeegee.
What to watch for
It does not go everywhere. Steam is heat and moisture together. Avoid unsealed wood, laminate with open joints, plasterboard and delicate fabrics — they can swell or warp. Always test a small area first.
Water. In hard water areas, limescale blocks the nozzle. If the manufacturer permits deionised water, use it — it triples the life of the appliance.
Heat-up time and capacity. Small handheld steamers heat in minutes but empty quickly. For a big job you need a larger tank — otherwise you wait for it to cool before refilling.
Beware of burns. The steam comes out at high temperature. Never towards a person or animal, and never open the tank while it is under pressure.
