Air fryer or classic deep fryer?
They are two entirely different appliances with a similar name.
Air fryer. It does not fry — it is a small oven with a powerful fan circulating hot air. It needs one spoon of oil or none at all. The result is crisp but not identical to deep-fried — it is closer to oven-roasted, much faster.
Classic deep fryer. It immerses food in hot oil. It gives the authentic fried result that no air fryer reproduces exactly — at the cost of the oil, the smell and disposing of it.
The honest rule: if you want healthier and easier, an air fryer. If you want authentic chips, a deep fryer.
What an air fryer genuinely does well
Beyond chips, where it became famous, it performs excellently with chicken, vegetables, frozen products and reheating. Reheating is the underrated one: yesterday’s pizza or fried food comes out crisp, not rubbery as in a microwave.
The second advantage is preheating time. A conventional oven takes fifteen minutes; an air fryer takes three. For one or two people, that changes what you cook day to day.
Capacity: the most common disappointment
The stated capacities are of the basket, not of the portion. Food has to spread in a single layer for air to circulate — stack it and it comes out soft instead of crisp.
In practice: 3-4 litres for one or two people, 5-6 litres for a family of four, and a dual-basket model if you want to cook two things at once at different temperatures.
And a reality: an air fryer takes up worktop space and does not go easily into a cupboard. Measure where it will sit before buying.

Frequently asked questions
- Does it really make crisp chips?
- Crisp yes, but not identical to deep-fried. They are closer to oven-roasted, in far less time.
- Does it need oil?
- One spoon helps with crispness, but many foods cook with none at all.
- Which capacity should I choose?
- 3-4 litres for one or two people, 5-6 for a family. Food has to spread in a single layer.
- Is it easy to clean?
- The basket and drawer are non-stick and dishwasher safe on many models. It is clearly easier than a deep fryer with oil.
- Does it replace an oven?
- For one or two people and everyday meals, largely. For roasting trays, bread or large quantities, no.
If you want healthier and faster, an air fryer. If you want authentic chips, a classic fryer. And measure your worktop before ordering.
