Where they genuinely change a space
LED strips are among the few lighting products that make a visible difference at minimal cost — provided they go in the right places.
Under kitchen cupboards. The best use. A worktop is always in your own shadow when you stand at it — the ceiling light comes from behind. A strip under the cupboard solves a problem no ceiling fitting can.
Behind a television or monitor. It reduces eye strain from the brightness difference between a bright screen and a dark room. Govee models with sync also extend the picture colours onto the wall.
Concealed lighting in plasterboard or under shelves. Indirect light that does not hit the eyes.
Stairs and hallways. Low light at night, without switching on the main fitting.
The three things that decide whether it looks good
1. LED density. The most important and least considered point. A strip with few LEDs per metre does not give a continuous line of light — it gives visible dots. In concealed lighting where the strip is hidden that does not matter; where it is visible, it ruins the effect.
2. An adequately rated power supply. Every metre of strip draws current. An undersized supply heats up, buzzes and eventually fails — and the strip lights unevenly. Add up the metres and allow a margin.
3. Water protection. For a kitchen near a sink, a bathroom or outdoors you need a strip with an explicit rating. An ordinary strip in a damp spot corrodes and dies in sections.
Practical points for fitting
Clean the surface first. Adhesive tape does not hold on a greasy or dusty surface — and in a kitchen, every surface is greasy. A wipe with alcohol solves the problem that otherwise appears two weeks later with the strip hanging down.
Do not bend it sharply at a corner. The strip has conductors that break. At a corner, cut and join with a proper connector or make a wide curve.
Do not cut it anywhere. There are cut marks at each segment — cutting in the wrong place renders the next segment useless.
Do not run it coiled. On the reel, heat concentrates and destroys the LEDs. Unroll it fully before testing.
