The number that changes an entire room
It is not the watts — it is the colour temperature in Kelvin, and it is the most commonly ignored specification in any lighting purchase.
2700K - 3000K (warm white). Yellowish, warm. For living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms — it creates a relaxing atmosphere and is the light we associate with home.
4000K (neutral white). Clean, with no tint. For kitchens, bathrooms and work areas, where you need to see colours accurately.
6000K and above (cool white). Bluish, harsh. For storerooms, garages and technical spaces. In a living room it feels like a hospital — it is the number one mistake in domestic lighting.
And a second number for those who care: the colour rendering index. A high index means colours appear as they truly are — important in kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere you apply make-up.
How much light a room needs
The measure that matters is lumens, not watts. Watts show consumption; lumens show light. A current LED gives the same light at a fraction of an old bulb’s consumption.
In practice: for general lighting reckon on around 100-150 lumens per square metre in living rooms and bedrooms, and more in kitchens and work areas.
And the rule that changes everything: one fitting in the centre does not light a room properly. Good lighting works in layers — a central fitting, wall lights and a table or floor lamp for reading.
Smart lights: are they worth it?
The Yeelight and WiZ ranges connect to an app and adjust brightness, colour and schedules. The question is whether you will genuinely use it.
Where they pay off: when you change intensity through the day — bright in the morning, warm and dim in the evening. And for scheduling while away, for security.
Where they do not: in rooms you switch on and off without ever thinking about the light. There, a good conventional fitting with the right colour temperature does the job.
One caution: smart lights need constant power. If you cut the wall switch, the connection is lost and they cannot be turned on from the app.
