The three numbers you need before buying
They are not watts. They are these three — and the first two decide whether the bulb will fit at all.
1. The cap. The part that screws or clips in. The common ones: E27 (large screw), E14 (small screw, for chandeliers and table lamps), GU10 (spotlight with two twist pins), G9 or G4 (small pins). The wrong cap means the bulb does not fit — and it is the number one cause of returns. Unscrew the old one and look at it before ordering.
2. Lumens, not watts. Watts show consumption — and an LED uses a fraction of the old one. Light is measured in lumens. A useful equivalence: an old 60W bulb corresponds to around 800 lumens, a 40W to 450 lumens.
3. The colour temperature in Kelvin. The most common and most irritating mistake: 2700K warm for living rooms and bedrooms, 4000K neutral for kitchens and bathrooms, 6000K cool only for storerooms. A 6000K bulb in a living room feels like a hospital.
And the most useful practical tip: buy all the bulbs for a room together, in the same colour. Mixed colours in one room are immediately visible and look careless.
When an LED does not work properly
Three situations cause problems — and they are worth knowing before you blame the bulb.
With a dimmer. Only bulbs explicitly marked dimmable work. An ordinary LED on a dimmer flickers, buzzes or will not dim and wears out prematurely. In addition, old dimmers made for incandescent lamps often do not cooperate even with dimmable LEDs and need replacing.
In an enclosed fitting. An LED produces less heat, but its electronics are sensitive to heat. In a sealed fitting its life is drastically shortened — there are bulbs that explicitly state suitability for enclosed fittings.
With a switch that has an indicator light. The tiny current passing through makes the bulb glow faintly or flash while the switch is off. It is solved with a suitable component.
How long they actually last
The stated life of an LED is impressive — but it is measured in ideal conditions.
Two things shorten it in practice: heat, as noted, and frequent switching. In a hallway or toilet switched on and off dozens of times a day, the real life is clearly shorter.
And a quality point: a cheap LED does not burn out — it fades gradually. It loses brightness and shifts colour over time, so the room becomes darker without you noticing.
