Why they work particularly well in Greece
Solar lighting is one of the few products that performs better here than in the countries that designed it. Sunshine is its fuel, and here there is plenty.
But the real advantage is not saving electricity — it is that no wiring is needed. To light a garden path with mains power you have to dig a trench, run conduit and call an electrician. With solar, you push it into the ground and you are done.
That is why it is the right answer in a rented property, a holiday house with no supply, a spot far from a socket, and anywhere you want light without permanent work.
Where you place them — the most important thing
Every problem with solar lights comes down to one thing: the panel is not getting enough sun.
A light in the shade of a tree, under a balcony, on a north-facing wall or behind plants will run for half an hour and go out. It is not faulty — it is not charging.
The rule: the panel needs direct sun for several hours, ideally facing south. And note that shade changes with the seasons — a spot in sun in June may be shaded in December.
And one that gets forgotten: do not place a solar light near another light. The sensor thinks it is daytime and does not switch on.
What to expect realistically
Ambient and marker lighting, not task lighting. Solar path lights show where the path is — they do not light the garden like a floodlight. If you want real light, see the floodlights.
Winter. Fewer hours of sun and more hours of darkness means shorter run time. That is normal, not a fault.
The battery is the part that wears out. After a few seasons, a solar light that "does not hold" has an exhausted battery. On better models it can be replaced — and it is worth checking whether it can, because otherwise you throw away the whole light.
Clean the panel. Dust, salt and leaves noticeably reduce charging. A wipe two or three times a year restores performance — and it is the most common reason a solar light "broke".
