A desk lamp is not decoration
If you work or read for hours at a table, a desk lamp is a matter of eyes, not aesthetics. The room’s central light casts your shadow onto the page or the keyboard — and eye strain comes precisely from the difference in brightness between the screen and the surrounding space.
Three things it must have: an adjustable arm so you can bring the light where it is needed, brightness control to match the room, and a stable base that does not tip when you angle it.
And placement: the light comes from the opposite side to your writing hand. Otherwise your own hand shadows what you are doing.
Colour and flicker
For study and work, neutral white around 4000K holds attention. For reading before sleep, warm around 2700K, because cool light makes falling asleep harder. Models with adjustable temperature do both.
One point invisible to the eye: flicker. Cheap LEDs flicker at a frequency you do not consciously perceive, but it tires the eyes over long sessions. Quality lamps state this explicitly.
The smart features that genuinely help
Wireless charging in the base. The lamp sits beside you anyway — having it charge the phone as well saves a socket and a cable.
Timer and gradual dimming. Useful on a bedside table: the light dims gradually and switches itself off.
Battery. A cordless table lamp moves to the balcony or the garden table — and works during a power cut.

Frequently asked questions
- Which side should I place it?
- On the opposite side to your writing hand, so your hand does not shadow what you are doing.
- Which colour temperature for reading?
- Neutral white around 4000K for study and work. Warm around 2700K for reading before sleep.
- Why do my eyes get tired?
- Often from the brightness difference between a screen and a dark room, or from flicker in cheap LEDs.
- Do I need an adjustable arm?
- If you work for hours, yes. It is the difference between light that reaches the right spot and light that merely exists.
- Is wireless charging in the base worth it?
- If the lamp sits on a desk or bedside table, yes — you save a socket and a cable.
If you work or read for hours, a proper desk lamp does more for your eyes than anything else in the room.
