Which torch you actually need

For home and car. A small torch that works when you need it. What matters is not power but reliability — a torch with dead batteries during a power cut is useless.

Head torch. For work with both hands free — under a sink, at a car engine, in a fuse box. It is one of those tools you do not think about until you use one once.

Floodlight. For a yard, a building site, camping and outdoor work. It lights an area rather than a point.

High-output tactical torches. The Ledlenser and AceBeam ranges are aimed at professional and specialist use: security, rescue, hunting, night hiking.

Batteries: the real difference

With standard batteries. The advantage is that you swap a battery and carry on, anywhere. Ideal for an emergency torch kept in a drawer — provided you keep spares.

Rechargeable. More economical in regular use and brighter, because lithium cells deliver more current. The drawback: if you forget to charge it, there is no alternative.

The practical solution for a home: one rechargeable for daily use and one with standard batteries in a drawer for emergencies, with the batteries stored outside the torch so they do not corrode.

The numbers that matter

Lumens. How much light it puts out. For home use, 200-500 lumens is more than enough. Above 1000 we are talking outdoor and professional use — indoors they simply dazzle.

Beam distance in metres. It shows how far the beam reaches. A torch with fewer lumens but good focus reaches further than a powerful one with a wide beam.

Water and drop resistance. If the torch will live in a car, a toolbox or a rucksack, these matter more than lumens.

And a practical tip: many torches have an SOS flash mode. In a car breakdown at night it is genuinely useful — learn how to activate it before you need it.

Frequently asked questions

How many lumens do I need?
For home and car, 200-500 lumens is enough. Above 1000 is for outdoor and professional use.
Rechargeable or standard batteries?
Rechargeable for regular use. Standard batteries for an emergency torch, so you can swap and carry on.
Why does my torch never work when I need it?
Usually batteries that have drained or corroded inside it. Store batteries outside the torch when putting it away for a long time.
What is beam distance?
How far the beam reaches. It depends on focus, not only on lumens.
Is it rainproof?
Only models with an explicit water resistance rating. It is stated in the specifications.

For a home, keep two: a rechargeable for daily use and one with batteries in a drawer. And check it twice a year.
